What type of coverage do umbrella policies provide?

Excess coverage over the primary policy

Umbrella coverage sits above your primary liability policies and provides excess protection. It pays after the limits of your underlying policies (like auto or homeowners) have been reached, giving you a higher overall liability limit. It may also fill in some gaps where underlying policies don’t fully cover a claim, up to the umbrella limit. It does not replace your primary coverage, isn’t limited to property damage, and isn’t life insurance.

Primary coverage for first-dollar losses

Coverage only for property damage

Coverage for life insurance
